در سینمای قبل از انقلاب با فیلمنامه نویسی شروع کرد و فیلمنامه های بسیاری  نوشت. «نازنین» اولین فیلم او یکی از بهترین فیلمهای او نیز به شمار  می رود. او در سال 1377 با ساخت مصائب شیرین نوع جدیدی ار سینما را به وجود آورد: سینمای کم خرج خانوادگی. این نوع سینما بعدها برای داونژاد خیلی موثر واقع شد.
