The film deals with the life of an old man who has spent most of his life guarding a railroad crossing. His wife contributes to their income by weaving carpets. Their son, a military conscript, returns home on leave, but only to drink tea, sleep, eat, sleep and leave. The old man receives a letter telling him he has reached the age of retirement and a new crossing-guard arrives. He goes to town to complain about his miserable state but nobody pays any attention. After thirty years in the same post, his lot becomes clear to him and he accepts it. The film was awarded the Silver Bear prize for best direction at the Berlin Film Festival in 1974, the International Film Critic's Prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 1974, the Protestant Film Critic's prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 1974, and the Catholic Film Critic's prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 1974.
